President's Message

Time to Kick off Fiscal Year 2011-2012

I want to start by saying I am excited and honored to be serving as your President this fiscal year.  I will do my best to serve and represent the members of Mission Society of Enrolled Agents both the local levels as well as at the state level with California Society of Enrolled Agents.

I would like to personally thank Stan Skelton, EA for installing me at the June meeting and conducting the installation ceremony for the other Officer's and Board Directors.

Thank you to Jessie Singh, EA.  Our Immediate Past President worked hard last year and made sure to turn over MSEA in great shape.  The efforts of Jessie and his Board were rewarded with and increase in membership winning the last CSEA membership drive with 27 new members.  As well as combined advertising on KGO radio with 3 other Chapters making the public more aware of who and what Enrolled Agents are...the Tax Experts!

We have a new Board and a new lunch venue (The Wyndham Hotel).  Come visit a board meeting and see what is going on.  Please stay for lunch and enjoy great speakers, get some CE units and interact and network with your fellow EAs.

There are great education events happening over the next few months. Check them out at our website: www.missioneas.org, under education and our "What's Hot" area.

Our first social event of this fiscal year is the San Jose Giants game on July 27, 2011.  More information and registration can be found at our website.

The next CSEA Board meeting is on September 24-25, 2011.  I encourage you as a member to join me in attending.  MSEA does have a reimbursement program for members who wish to attend and participate at CSEA meetings and committee. Contact me for more information-maybe we can car pool!

This year will be full of exciting and rewarding benefits for all our members.  I hope you will join me in participating to your fullest and taking advantage of all the things your membership in MSEA, CSEA and NAEA offers.

Warmest Regards,

Torie Charvez, EA

MSEA President

What I have learned lately

First of all, thank you to all that read my submission from last month and gave me feedback. There will be more on that issue forthcoming, I am working on gathering more information on that issue.

This month, I would like to let you know that I am seeing more and more auditors willing to waive penalties. As we know, the 20% accuracy related penalties have been assessed on adjusted tax liabilities that are over 10% of the original tax or $5,000 of increased tax.

This is not every office but a couple of the offices started implementing a policy that if the taxpayer agrees and can full pay the liability they will waive the penalty. I have also had success in self-prepared returns by letting the auditor know that the taxpayer is either not going to file their returns without help in the future or they are going to get educated so that they can file an accurate return. As for professionally prepared returns, as long as the
taxpayer has provided the correct information to the preparer and the preparer does not prepare a good return, than in that case we can always blame the preparer. I know this may sound a little harsh but if you are doing your best as a preparer then this is not going to affect you. On the other hand, we all see returns that are poorly prepared and the taxpayer is counting on the preparer to keep them out of trouble, when these types of returns are audited and liabilities occur it should not be the taxpayer's problem.

EAs in the Community

We have several MSEA members participating in various outreach activities.  If you have given a presentation, been interviewed by a reporter, assumed a leadership role in your community or worked to promote Enrolled Agents, in general, we want to know.

In June, Tori Charvez EA (MSEA President) was very busy.  She presented an Ethics seminar to the California Society of Tax Consultants on June 15, a Sales Tax seminar to the Small Business Meetup in Mountain View and co-presented a Payroll seminar with EDD on June 16.

Cynthia Leachmoore EA was interviewed on KSCO in June on tax issues for Registered Domestic Partners (RDP).  In July, she will speak at the MSEA luncheon meeting and teach a workshop in Santa Cruz on this topic.

Claudia Hill EA will be presenting a Spidell webinar on July 7 on responding to IRS notices.  Forbes published an online article by Claudia in May on the taxation of high income taxpayers by the state of California.  If you would like to read the article you can find it at http://blogs.forbes.com/irswatch/.

CSEA Annual Meeting

The 2011 Annual meeting for the California Society of Enrolled Agents (CSEA) was held in Pasadena the week of June 20.   MSEA members attending the CSEA Annual and Board Meetings were Tori Charvez EA (MSEA President), Bob Davi EA (MSEA President Elect), Jessie Singh EA (MSEA Immediate Past President), Jill Mendenhall EA (CSEA Director), and Margy Dunn (CSEA Education Committee Chair).
The CSEA Officers were elected and the Board of Directors installed during this meeting.
Jean Nelsen EA is our 2011/2012 CSEA President.  We look forward to her upcoming visit to
our chapter.

Volunteers Needed at IRS Forum

CSEA needs volunteers to set up, staff and breakdown the Booth-in-a-Box at the San Jose
IRS Forum.  Set-up is on Monday, August 8, from 1:00-3:00pm.  Staffing shifts are Tuesday, August 9, from 11:00am-1:30pm, 1:30-3:45pm, 3:45-6:00pm or Wednesday, August 10, from 10:00am-12:00pm or 12:00-2:00pm.  Breakdown will be on Wednesday from 2:00-4:00pm.
If you are attending the IRS Forum, have a break in your schedule and want to promote Enrolled Agents - we would appreciate your help.  For more information or to volunteer contact Cary Steward at csteward@csea.org or (916) 366-6646.

Booth-in-a-Box

If you have not seen the Booth-in-the-Box, we will have one at the July luncheon meeting.  MSEA purchased one to promote Enrolled Agents and MSEA at community and society events.
