President's Message

I would like to start by thanking all of the members of Mission Society of Enrolled Agents for affording me the opportunity to serve this past year as your president. In the past year I feel that the board as a whole accomplished a lot of what we had set out to do. We have continued to offer excellent continuing education events as well as basic tax course, SEE preparation and this coming year the education committee is offering even more. Our website has been enhanced and is offering more and more for our members and community. The PIA campaign was a grEAt success in that we are aware of at least 2 of our members that gained a client from it, as well as being approached to utilize our "Speakers' Bureau".  Our membership has been growing steadily to where we are proud to say that this year (2010) was the highest growth in our history this is in all types of members which proves that this is an organization to be proud to belong to.

The May meeting will be held on May 25, 2010 (please note this is the 4th Tuesday not the 3rd) at Maggiano's this will be our annual election and installation. I would like to see everyone there to support the new board and vote them in. We also have a few proposed changes to the bylaws which have been posted on the website follow this link to preview: http://www.missioneas.org/pdfs/Bylaws/2010%20Bylaws%20for%20Approval.pdf  Please review them prior as we will be voting on these also. The board meeting will be held at 10:00am prior the monthly meeting and as always it is open to all members and your input is always welcome.

As a reminder, you do not need to sit on the sidelines, get involved. We have a number of committees that need your help and I encourage all of you to participate in any way you feel comfortable to continue making MSEA grEAt.

Tax Presentations to Stanford Graduate Students

It is not easy finding someone who is willing to stand before 50-200 Stanford graduate students and present tax preparation information.  This is especially true during tax season and with foreign graduate students that have the added complexities of visas, tax treaties, and special filing requirements.   Fortunately for MSEA's PIA committee, Russell Barnett, EA, and Myra Thompson, EA, agreed to help us do exactly that.

Russell presented a tax seminar to approximately 40 graduate students on March 31, 2010.  We are very grateful to Russell for taking time away from his practice during the busiest time of the season to conduct this seminar.  The presentation organizers, Stanford Graduate Student Council, received positive feedback from the attending students.

Myra and Connie Wei EA helped develop the presentation materials and find a speaker for the foreign graduate student presentation on April 1.  Jeff Tarnowski, CPA, spoke to approximately 200 foreign graduate students about tax preparation for non-residents.  Attending students indicated that they received a tremendous amount of useful information that they can use when preparing their tax returns.

We also want to thank Torie Charvez, EA, and Marie Sairy, EA, for attending the seminars and being available to answer questions from the students.

The slides from both presentations were posted on the Stanford graduate web site.  The web site also includes general information about Enrolled Agents with the www.yourea.org link for students seeking a tax professional.  As of April 11, over 500 students have visited the website to look at the session slides and/or the names of tax professionals listed.

The Stanford Graduate Student Council is interested in an ongoing relationship with MSEA and its members.  The information on Enrolled Agents and the link to www.yourea.org will remain on their website after April 15th.  We hope to include our educational events on the website for graduate students that may be interested in becoming Enrolled Agents.
