PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
August was a busy month for MSEA and for those who have not been able to participate in some of the events I would like to let you know that you certainly missed some fun. We had our annual outing at San Jose Municipal Stadium to see the San Jose Giants and have a great BBQ dinner. Unfortunately the home team lost but thanks to Yahoo the fireworks were fantastic. We had David Shaw EA president of CSEA at our monthly meeting he spoke on retirement plans as well as asked the members for their input on how to make CSEA a better organization for its members. David sent us a thank you note for welcoming him and letting us know that he will be taking our comments back to the CSEA leadership so they can be addressed. I would like to share his closing comment "You truly have an incredible chapter". We also kicked off our new networking/advertising on the website this month, for a nominal fee you can let your fellow members know what you specialize in and help support the chapter. Go to the classified section of the website MSEA website and see who is already listed and add your name to the list as well. Our Speakers' Bureau is up and running if you work for a company or are a member of a chamber of commerce or other organization and they would be interested in having a brown bag lunch with a tax talk topic please let Jill Mendenhall know and she will be happy to set it up. Please remember that our monthly meeting is being postponed for one week do to the September 15th deadline and will be on September 22, 2009 I look forward to seeing you all there.
Alan L Pinck EA President MSEA 2009-2010

Why You Should Support Education Produced by EA Societies
Margy Dunn, EA Today in the mail I received two catalogs from companies offering tax education in 2009 and 2010. Both of these catalogs were from private companies. While I was impressed with what they had to offer, I threw the catalogs in my recycling bin. Why? It's because I have made a commitment to support the educational offerings provided by enrolled agent societies such as NAEA, CSEA and MSEA. While membership dues are important part of any organization's budget, the money raised through educational offerings is the primary source of income for most enrolled agent societies. I like knowing that any profit generated through my payment of tuition is going to support the profession I so dearly care about. These societies work hard on my behalf to protect my right to practice, to promote the enrolled agent designation to the public and to be proactive in legislation that will affect my clients and my livelihood. Please join me in supporting the outstanding education provided by National Association of Enrolled Agents, the California Society of Enrolled Agents and Mission Society of Enrolled Agents.

Ernesto (Ernie) H. Hayden
Ernie was one of the first candidates to take the SEE in its current 3-part format, passing the exam in fall of 2006 while working as a tax preparer for H&R Block. In 2007, he became an EA. Before taking the exam and before working at H&R Block as a seasonal preparer, Ernie was a Systems Engineer at Sun Microsystems. While working as an engineer he took finance and financial planning courses at night. In 1999 when he retired from Sun Microsystems he decided to enroll in the financial planning certificate program at US Santa Cruz because the program offered the depth and precision he was seeking in a post-retirement career. In 1999 Ernie also purchased a condo in Buenos Aires. While working as an engineer for Sun, Ernie had several assignments in South America and decided that he would spend a part of his retirement there. Shortly after purchasing the condo, he contracted Guillaine-Barre Syndrome a disorder where the immune system attacks the nerves causing weakness and numbness of the extremities. It took 2 years to recover enough mobility to resume the program at UC Santa Cruz. It was when Ernie attended Kent Noard's Tax Planning class that he decided to pursue a career in tax preparation. He began working for H&R Block in 2004 where he prepares individual and small business returns. Ernie also volunteers for the VITA and TCE programs through the City of San Jose Office on Aging. He gets pleasure from discovering a good tax deduction or credit for someone whose cash flow is less than robust. He is particularly interested in retirement and medical deduction issues. Ernie joined CSEA in 2007 and became a member of MSEA. He joined the organization to meet and learn from more experienced Enrolled Agents. He has also shared some of his experiences with new tax preparers as an instructor for the 60-hour basic MSEA class and VITA.

MSEA at San Jose Giants Game It was a wonderfully balmy evening on Wednesday, August 5th, as the Mission Society hosted a San Jose Giants game at San Jose Municipal Stadium. Planes soared overhead on their approach to Mineta San Jose International Airport as the Giants battled the Visalia Rawhides. Unfortunately, Giants' bats did not send any hit soaring or runs to the plate. They lost 1-0, in what would be called a pitcher's duel if it were not for the spectacular fielding which kept San Jose in the game. Before the game, Alan greeted Mission Society members with tickets at the front gate. Seating was ideal as we sat behind home plate with a panoramic view of the field. The food was ballpark excellent, with scintillating talk of Santa Clara County property tax assessments (751s) and Franchise Tax Board IOUs as payments for quarterly taxes. After the last pitch fireworks bid us a fond farewell by 9:30 pm. |
| Stay tuned for information regarding MSEA's Holiday party blast Wednesday December 16. |
| Help plan MSEA's 2010 education events:
If you would like to help, then plan to attend the next Education Meeting on September 9.
Held at the offices of Telesky Financial Services & Rosemary Hernandez, located at 2095 Park Ave San Jose CA 95126

| Instructors for Volunteer Income Tax Assistance/VITA FY2010
The IRS/SPEC is working to connect Santa Clara County and expanding to San Benito County to offer free tax preparation sites and access to the federal ARRA Provisions and other tax credits to help working families increase their incomes and create savings. The VITA Program helps low-income people to keep more of their hard-earned money. The money returned to these individuals and families is critical in helping them meet basic needs and achieve a level of financial stability Volunteer recruitment efforts are underway and we NEED you! In the past the Mission Society of Enrolled Agents has played a key part in this program. We ask once again for your assistance for FY2010. Roles: Instruct tax law classes for VITA/TCE Programs. Classes could be basic (for new volunteers), refresher (for those knowledgeable in taxes), or, train-the-trainer (for those who are going to instruct other classes). Classes may be an integrated class that combines tax law and software training and certification. Training will begin on each Saturday, January 9, 2010 and will continue through Saturday January 30, 2010. The classes start from 8:30 AM thru 4:30 PM. If you would like to be an instructor for either of these counties please contact: Randy Warshawsky [randy@4taxman.com] phone 408-445-1151.
