Tax Aspects of Bankruptcy
With the downturn in the economy, consumer bankruptcy filings have skyrocketed. Your clients may be among those needing bankruptcy protection and may benefit from being able to discharge tax debts in bankruptcy. Enrolled agents can play a key role by assisting clients and their attorneys in determining if and when a bankruptcy is a viable alternative for resolving tax liabilities. This course is designed to provide enrolled agents with an understanding of consumer bankruptcy law, and strategies and tactics for assisting clients seeking relief through bankruptcy. You will learn how to determine which bankruptcy provisions apply to common situations; understand the enrolled agent's role in bankruptcy accounting and tax planning; identify common tax issues arising before and during bankruptcy; and review cancellation of indebtedness issues.
Objectives:
- Understand how consumer bankruptcy works
- Review filing options for bankruptcy
- Explore optional tax reporting of debt forgiveness income.
- Discuss tax planning for bankruptcy and insolvency.
- Learn what taxes can be discharged in bankruptcy
- Understand how to work with attorneys and bankruptcy courts when providing accounting services to insolvent taxpayers.
The course is taught by Steven L. Walker, an attorney in San Jose, California.

taxation of individuals, tax planning and practice before IRS. She is
Editor-in-Chief of the CCH, Inc., Journal of Tax Practice &
Procedure. Ms. Hill is owner and principal of Tax Mam, Inc. in
Cupertino, CA. Her firm provides tax preparation, planning and
controversy representation services. She acts as a resource person for
tax topics to news media including Dow, Hearst and Forbes. She has
testified before Congressional committees numerous times. She is an
Associate member of the ABA Tax Section, a Fellow and former Dean of the
NAEA-EF National Tax Practice Insititute, and a speical advisor to the
Government Relations Committee of NAEA. A frequent speaker of CCH Audio
Seminars, Claudia has presented at every CSEA Super Seminar held and
over a decade of IRS Nationwide tax forums.
